— A voyage through time —
The colourful history of the Sarah Sands Hotel is rivalled only by its namesake. The steam ship Sarah Sands sailed the world from 1846 to 1869, adding to her legendary status at every port.
Originally built as a passenger ship in Liverpool, and named after the wife of Liverpool’s mayor, she began life sailing packets between the UK and New York, and then between San Francisco and Panama. When Melbourne’s gold mining boom began in the 1850s, she sailed for Australia, before taking on a new life for the Canadian Steam Navigation Company and then as a troop carrier during the Crimean War.
In 1857, she was gutted by a fire at sea with all aboard surviving – a miraculous story of ‘undefeatable courage and cool-headedness’ immortalised by Rudyard Kipling. The preservation of the ship and her crew was noted by The Times to be ‘one of the most marvellous on record.
— The local —
The Sarah Sands Hotel has been a Brunswick landmark since it was established in 1854, standing proudly at the edge of the city as a gateway to vibrant Sydney Road.
Named after the SS Sarah Sands which reportedly brought the hotel’s original licensee, Robert Barry, to Australia, the hotel has changed appearance inside and out over the years, reflecting the times and shifting character of the neighbourhood.
From a 1950s hot house packed until the 6 o’clock swill each night, to an adult club in the 80s and Bridie O’Reilly’s in the 90s, Sarah has witnessed more than a century and a half of social change.
Throughout this time, Sarah has held a special place in the hearts and minds of the local community. And now she is coming back, better than ever.
She looked like
a spirit of light
